In dieser Übung geht es darum, ein Gemälde in drei Dimensionen zu reproduzieren, um eine Fotoaufnahme davon zu machen. Die perspektivischen Verzerrungen und die unterschiedlichen Texturen stellen ein großes Herausforderung für die Erstellung solcher Bilder dar. Wir haben uns vorgenommen, drei Bilder mit unterschiedlichem Inhalt und Medium miteinander in Beziehung zu setzen. Ein Gemälde (Öl auf Leinwand) von Eric Fischl aus dem Jahr 1979 mit dem Titel «Sleepwalker», eine Radierung von William Kentridge «Pyramus and Thisbe» (aus der Serie «the Pit» (1979) und eine Illustration von Igor Maistrovski (Mischtechnik) «Surrealist composition with a divided table and a burning house on it», die als Visualisierung für die Plakate von Andrej Tarkovskis Film «Sacrifice» diente.
Wir entschieden uns für die Form eines Diptychons, das verschiedene Elemente der drei Bilder miteinander in Dialog bringt. Um die Komponenten zu vermischen, wurden Modelle in verschiedenen Maßstäben angefertigt.
Ein erstes Bild mit dem Blick von oben auf Maistrovskis halbierten Tisch mit einer quadratischen Öffnung und an deren Rand die Menschenmenge, die im Hintergrund auf dem W. Kentridge zu sehen ist.Die Tischdecke wird geleimt und gehärtet, damit sie ihre starre Form behält und im Raum schwebt.
Die schwarzen Flächen werden mit «Musu Black» bemalt, einer Spezialfarbe, die 99% des Lichts absorbiert, um auch bei starker Beleuchtung ein dichtes und flaches Schwarz zu erhalten ( unverzichtbar, um die Blende maximal öffnen zu können und so trotz der Makroaufnahmen eine gute Schärfentiefe zu erhalten).
Nach einigen erfolglosen Versuchen, die richtige Technik für die Hauptfigur, die Gartenstühle und die Menge der Badenden zu finden, entschied ich mich für digitale Techniken. Ich modellierte die Figuren und Objekte in Rhino und DAZ und druckte sie dann in Harz auf der 3D-Imprinte aus. Der Junge wurde so gemalt, dass man die Pinselstriche und die Textur des Originals wiederfindet. Die Silhouetten der Menschenmenge sind ebenfalls texturiert und grob gemalt, um das Original zu übertragen.Das Wasser im Schwimmbecken, in das der Junge macht, wird aus farbigem, durchsichtigem Harz gegossen.
